Syphon System — complete condensate removal for steam-heated rotating cylinders

Reliable condensate removal from a steam-heated rotating cylinder is not the job of any single component — it is the result of a matched assembly working together as a system. We supply complete syphon systems — siphon pipe, syphon elbow, and rotary joint — engineered and matched together as a single order, without the compatibility risk of assembling components from different sources.

Only as reliable as the weakest match between three parts

The rotary joint admits steam and provides the exit path for condensate; the siphon pipe reaches into the cylinder to pick up condensate as it forms; and the syphon elbow connects the two, directing flow cleanly from the rotating interior out through the stationary joint. Specify any one of these components in isolation and the system as a whole is only as reliable as the weakest match between them. We supply complete syphon systems — siphon pipe, syphon elbow, and rotary joint — engineered and matched together as a single order, so that condensate is removed at the rate steam condenses across the full width and speed range of the cylinder.

What is a syphon system?

Three functional parts, sized and matched together

A syphon system is the complete condensate management assembly fitted to a steam-heated rotating cylinder — a drying cylinder, calender roll, heated platen, or similar equipment.

Siphon pipe, syphon elbow, and rotary joint working as one matched assembly
  • Siphon pipe

The internal pick-up pipe that extends into the rotating cylinder, positioned to draw condensate from the point where it collects as steam gives up its heat to the cylinder wall.

  • Syphon elbow

The fitting that connects the siphon pipe to the rotary joint, directing condensate flow out of the cylinder as it turns.

  • Rotary joint

The rotating connection at the cylinder end that admits live steam into the cylinder and provides the stationary exit path for condensate leaving through the syphon elbow and pipe.

Because condensate removal, steam admission, and cylinder rotation all happen through the same connection point, the three components must be sized and matched together — not selected independently — for the system to perform reliably across the cylinder's full operating range.

Why condensate removal matters

Efficiency loss and mechanical risk, eliminated together

When condensate is not removed quickly and completely from inside a rotating cylinder, it accumulates on the cylinder wall, reduces heat transfer efficiency, and causes uneven heating across the cylinder surface — leading to inconsistent product quality on drying, calendering, or laminating lines. Accumulated condensate can also be thrown against the incoming steam by cylinder rotation, causing water hammer that leads to serious mechanical damage to the cylinder, the syphon assembly, and the rotary joint itself. A correctly matched syphon system removes condensate continuously, at the rate it forms, eliminating both the efficiency loss and the mechanical risk.

Stationary vs. rotating syphon systems

The correct arrangement depends on cylinder speed and application

Syphon systems are broadly classified into two arrangements, and the correct choice depends on the cylinder's operating speed and the application.

Standard configuration

Stationary Syphon System

The siphon pipe remains fixed while the cylinder rotates around it. This is the simpler and more robust arrangement, well-suited to cylinders operating at moderate to high speeds, and is our standard configuration for textile, paper, and general process cylinder installations.

Application-specific

Rotating Syphon System

The siphon pipe rotates together with the cylinder. This arrangement is used in specific low-to-moderate speed applications where the mechanical layout of the cylinder favours a rotating pick-up point. We can supply rotating syphon systems where the application calls for it, engineered to the same standard of component matching as our stationary systems.

Why a matched system

Removing the compatibility risk of sourcing components separately

Supplying the siphon pipe, syphon elbow, and rotary joint as a single matched order gives a single point of accountability for the system's performance.

Consistent sizing

The siphon pipe reach, syphon elbow geometry, and rotary joint bore are dimensioned against the same cylinder drawing, so the pick-up point sits exactly where it needs to for the cylinder's diameter and rotation speed.

Matched pressure and temperature rating

All three components are rated for the same steam pressure and temperature conditions, avoiding a mismatch where one component becomes the limiting factor for the whole system.

Single-source accountability

One manufacturer, one specification process, and one point of contact for the complete system — rather than reconciling components and warranties across multiple suppliers.

Material options

Brass as standard, stainless steel for demanding conditions

Syphon system components are supplied in brass or stainless steel, selected to suit the application.

Standard material

Brass

The standard material for the siphon pipe and syphon elbow in most steam condensate applications, offering good corrosion resistance, excellent machinability, and reliable sealing at threaded joints.

For demanding conditions

Stainless Steel

Specified where higher corrosion resistance is required — chemically treated condensate, high-purity process environments, or aggressive steam conditions — and the preferred material for food and pharmaceutical applications where material purity and hygiene are important.

The rotary joint itself is specified separately for the cylinder's operating pressure, temperature, and speed, following the same material and seal selection process used across our rotary joint range.

Syphon systems are used wherever a steam-heated rotating cylinder requires efficient, continuous condensate drainage.

A complete system from one manufacturer

Full systems or individual components, from a single source

As a manufacturer of rotary joints, syphon elbows, siphon pipes, and flexible hoses, we are uniquely placed to supply the complete syphon system as a single, matched order — for a new cylinder installation or as a full replacement for an ageing system where components are due for renewal together. Individual components — syphon elbow, siphon pipe, or flexible hose — are also available separately for partial replacement of an existing installation.
